Customs & Entry

Book quarantine facility in advance

30+ days before travel

All pets entering Australia must complete quarantine at the Mickleham Post Entry Quarantine Facility near Melbourne. Book your spot in advance — this is the ONLY approved facility. Budget approximately AUD $2,000 for a standard stay.

Important Notes

Australia has some of the strictest pet import rules in the world. Pets can ONLY arrive through Melbourne (Tullamarine) airport. Quarantine is mandatory for all pets: minimum 10 days (if microchip was verified by an official government vet before the RNATT blood draw) or 30 days (default for dogs without pre-verification). Only dogs and cats can be imported as pets. Start planning at least 8–10 months ahead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my pet need a microchip to travel to Australia?

Yes. An ISO 11784/11785 compliant 15-digit microchip is required. The microchip must be implanted before the rabies vaccination is administered — if done in the wrong order, the vaccination may not count.

What vaccinations does my pet need to enter Australia?

A current rabies vaccination is required. In addition, a rabies antibody titer test (blood test) is required to confirm the vaccine was effective.

Is quarantine required when bringing a pet to Australia?

Yes. Pets entering Australia are subject to 10 days of mandatory post-arrival quarantine at a government-approved facility, even if all pre-arrival requirements are met.

How far in advance do I need to start preparing to travel to Australia with my pet?

At least 10 months before departure. Japan and similarly strict destinations require a rabies antibody titer test followed by a mandatory waiting period before travel.

What is the USDA health certificate and do I need one for Australia?

A USDA health certificate (Form 7001) is an official document signed by a USDA-accredited veterinarian confirming your pet's health and vaccination status. It must be issued within 10 days of departure and endorsed by your regional USDA APHIS office. Most international destinations require it.
