Customs & Entry

SENASICA inspection at port of entry

Upon arrival, a SENASICA/OISA official will perform a physical inspection of your pet, verifying the pet is healthy and free of disease, ectoparasites, and wounds. Mexico allows up to 2 pets per person duty-free; 3 or more incurs a fee (~MXN 1,620) payable via SENASICA's platform.

Important Notes

Mexico dropped the health certificate and USDA endorsement requirements for tourist travel with pets effective December 16, 2019. Only a current rabies vaccination record and a healthy pet are required by Mexican law. However, your airline may still require a health certificate for transport β€” check with your carrier. Bring a maximum one-day supply of pet food per pet. Only dogs and cats are classified as 'pets' for duty-free entry; exotic animals require CITES permits.

Frequently Asked Questions

What vaccinations does my pet need to enter Mexico?

A current rabies vaccination is required. The vaccine must be administered after microchipping and must remain valid on the date of arrival.

Is quarantine required when bringing a pet to Mexico?

No quarantine is required for pets that arrive with all documentation in order. If documentation is missing or incorrect, your pet may be detained.

How far in advance do I need to start preparing to travel to Mexico with my pet?

At least 3 weeks before departure. The main time-sensitive item is the health certificate, which must be issued within 10 days of travel and endorsed by USDA APHIS (allow 2–3 business days).

What is the USDA health certificate and do I need one for Mexico?

A USDA health certificate (Form 7001) is an official document signed by a USDA-accredited veterinarian confirming your pet's health and vaccination status. It must be issued within 10 days of departure and endorsed by your regional USDA APHIS office. Most international destinations require it.
